A Toy Dog Is For Real

What is a Toy Dog? If you’re thinking of a battery operated, wind up or stuffed toy that looks like a dog…um…no, sorry! It’s best we clear up any confusion right from the start.

Toy Dog Mag is all about real dogs, who range in size from tiny to small in stature, just like the one pictured here.

The Most Diverse Animal On The Planet

There are so many breeds of dog in the world that it would be hard for any doggy website to give equal time to all of them. Our focus here is on the smaller breeds affectionately called toy dogs.

Size Does Matter

Dogs on the tiny end of the scale tend to get overlooked…if you don’t believe me, just try this simple exercise. Say the word ‘dog’ to your friend or family member and ask them what’s the first image that springs to mind. For most of us, it’ll be a Labrador Retriever or a German Shepherd. These are the dogs that have heroic jobs; helping the police or guiding the blind. Retrievers are also one of the most popular dogs to have as a pet so most people either had one or knew a family that did while growing up.

Lightweight

Some dogs are so small, they can literally fit in a handbag! While it’s easy to think of these tiny breeds as yappy or silly, the truth is they’re smart and full of personality. In fact, these little dogs are clever enough to train you if you let them take charge!
If you’re thinking…hmm…she seems a bit too familiar with ignoring little doggies and their needs…well..sadly, you’re right. I once held such views myself and learnt the error of my ways from personal experience.

Intro to Pepi

When I first met Alarna ( my partner), she had a chihuahua / fox terrier mixed breed named Pepi.
Having grown up with a Labrador as my family pet, I found it hard to think of him as a real dog. He seemed so tiny and laughable as a member of the canine family.
Pepi soon taught me how wrong I was! He was intelligent, thoughtful, loving and gentle. He taught me to live for the moment with a strength of spirit too great to be ignored. As our friends would say about him,’so much personality in one small package’.
After sixteen larger than life years, Pepi passed away. The loss of Pepi made me realise just how important it is to value and respect all dogs, no matter how small. I will cherish his memory always.
As pet owners, we depend on our fur friends for unconditional love; yet tend to take them for granted. While this may be true for all our pets, it can be especially hard for toy dogs. Being cute and tiny, they’re still very much dogs. Just like their bigger cousins, they require a balanced diet, exercise, training and mental stimulation.

Toy dogs are here to stay

Whether or not tiny dogs are your preference, they’ve become an integral part of the pet world. From city apartments to caravan parks and beyond, these perky companions are everywhere! So next time a little dog darts into your path or you hear that familiar yappy bark, remember—it’s not their fault they exist. We humans brought them into our lives, and they’re here to stay as loyal, lovable members of our communities.
